I really, really want
to be real.
But it probably won’t be.
Which is far, far too bad.

Art-wise, big changeup today as I try out some stuff. Lots of Walt Kelly studies going on right now, playing with thicker linework, more hatching, bolder blacks in the background, and a surrealist color palette for BG elements.
I’m having fun with it. We’ll see how much of it sticks.
The big character change is pupils to the eyes, which I decided to try so that I could more easily get some extra expressions (eyerolls) and because controlling gaze with little-orphan-annie eyes is really hard.
Let me know what you think, if you have an opinion.
I like the way you did the pupils. I usually find character eyes without pupils a little off-putting. The exception being the way Watterson would sometimes have Calvin’s eyes go pupil-less for certain expressions. Just having pupils there makes the characters feel so much more alive to me. But I could be alone in that. I always draw mine with pupils.
The background palette matching the characters so strongly makes the entire strip feel more of one piece. Which can be both good or bad depending on your goal.
Yeah, background may be a bit too saturated…..
